Be a Nonprofit CEO: A Call to Action
“Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
Dr. Seuss’ beloved classic Oh, the Places You’ll Go is about the journey of life and it reminds us of the exciting potential and opportunity that awaits each of us. It also warns of the most useless place, “The Waiting Place.”
In the waiting place, people are waiting for a train to go, or a bus to come, or the snow to snow, or waiting around for a Yes or No.
Waiting. Feeling stuck.
Recent research has shown how many nonprofit professionals are feeling stuck and that this sense of being stuck is contributing to the growing leadership gap within the nonprofit sector.
There’s a real dilemma, particularly for early and mid-career nonprofit professionals, who want their work to make a difference in the world and who know they can do more but they feel stuck.
Maybe you can relate.
- Maybe you’re contemplating your next move.
- Maybe you don’t see a path forward in your current job.
- Maybe you don’t know where to start.
- Maybe you lack the skills and the confidence to take the next step.
- Maybe you don’t want to sacrifice your financial security, your mental and physical wellness, or time with your family and friends for a job.
That’s a whole lot of “maybes.” And yes, we hear you. We understand.
But if you want to be in a position to make real difference and to shape your role and organization – we are here to tell you this is your moment!
Several trends are converging to create this opportunity. First, the nonprofit sector is growing fast! As of April 2016, there were more than 1.5 million tax-exempt organizations in the U.S.. Add to that the increasing rate of baby boomers retiring. More than 40% of nonprofits expect turnover and retirement to be a reason for hiring new staff in 2018.
So, what does this mean for you?
It means that you are in the driver’s seat. You want to make a difference, but you don’t want to be overworked and underpaid? Then redefine the role. The opportunity is ripe. The only question is: are you ready to take advantage of this opportunity? Are you ready to be a nonprofit CEO?
It takes just three things.
- Bring the right skills to the table
